Stangate House & Garden

Private heritage house & world-famous garden.

Nestled in the Adelaide Hills village of Aldgate, Stangate House is a cherished 1940s heritage property and home of one of the world's most extraordinary gardens. Designed by Elise Cornish in the 1940s and lovingly tended ever since by a devoted team of volunteers, the four-acre garden surrounding this house is a singular place on earth. During your stay, it belongs entirely to you.

Accommodation for those who move slowly and notice deeply; gardeners, writers, dreamers, and anyone who knows that the most restorative places are the ones that feel quietly, completely alive.

Before the world wakes up, after it quiets down, and all the moments in between.

Step outside at dawn into still air and cascading blooms. Sit beneath the majestic oak. Wander the wisteria walkway as the light shifts. Come back inside to a house that feels like it has always been gently waiting for you. The four-acre garden at Stangate House is believed to be the only garden on the International Camelia Society of Excellence maintained fully by volunteers. It sits alongside Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, and palace gardens in Europe. It is famous throughout South Australia and cherished by garden enthusiasts far beyond it. When you stay, the garden is yours. A living, breathing masterpiece, yours alone for the duration of your stay.

A stay that gives back.

Your stay at Stangate House is more than accommodation – it is stewardship. As a National Trust SA heritage property, every night you spend here contributes to the preservation of an irreplaceable piece of South Australian history and to the continued care of a garden eighty years in the making.
